Kelvin Chan makes his Cincinnati Opera debut in 2008 as Yamadori and the Official Registrar in Madame Butterfly and the Messenger in La Traviata. Hailing from Chino Hills, CA, Kelvin Chan is an avid performer of the operatic, concert, and recital repertoire. With Opera Theater of Pittsburgh, Kelvin created the role of Shi-Yin in Red Dust, an opera electronica by Mathew Rosenblum. He was Valmont in Conrad Susa's The Dangerous Liaisons, with CCM Opera in 2006. He performed the role of Remendado in Carmen with 2005 Regional Theatre Tony Award-winning Theatre de la Jeune Lune in Minneapolis, MN and reprised that role with the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, MA. He has appeared with Cincinnati Opera, the Minnesota Opera, and Nautilus Music-Theater in St. Paul, MN. This season, he will again appear with CCM Opera as Schaunard in their upcoming production of Puccini's La Bohème. On the concert stage, Kelvin has performed as a soloist on Bach's St. Matthew Passion, Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem, Faure's Requiem, Haydn's Harmoniemesse, and Mozart's Requiem. For five years, he performed with the all-male chamber vocal ensemble, Cantus, and served as that ensemble's Artistic Co-Director. With Cantus, he performed concerts and conducted workshops in 46 of the contiguous 48 states. He recorded five albums with that ensemble, and his recording of Charles Villiers Stanford's Songs of the Sea appears on Cantus' 2006 album, There Lies the Home. Kelvin is an avid recitalist, with a particular interest in modern and contemporary American art song. St. John's United Church of Christ in Bellevue, KY featured his program with pianist Jennifer Quammen McGuire entitled American Portraits/Echoes of American Dreams on the 2007 Music on the Avenue Series. A graduate of Carleton College, with a B.A. in geology, Kelvin is currently pursuing his M.M. in voice performance at the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music, where he studies voice with William McGraw. |
